Column: Gun debate revives enduring American fight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? On the eve of a new year, a libertarian strain pulses through America ? a get-government-out-of-my-personal-life sensibility that cuts across ideologies and is driven by a younger generation's cultural attitudes.

We've seen it in gay-marriage legalization and marijuana decriminalization. And in the fact that, four decades after Roe v. Wade allowed abortion, there's little appetite among most for overturning it. Perhaps we've also seen this play out with guns, with a more limited role for government in regulating firearms.

But today, a mourning nation must square that shift toward fewer gun restrictions with a series of fatal mass shootings in the past few years, the latest claiming 20 elementary school students among the dead. And the pendulum may swing just as quickly back toward curbs on gun rights: A country that's become more tolerant on other cultural issues may end up bucking the trend on this subject.

Here's why: It can't be boiled down to "my body, my decisions."

The gun issue doesn't fit neatly into the libertarian lane in which the United States has been driving when it comes to gay marriage, abortion and marijuana ? the belief that people have the right to make their own decisions about how they live their lives, as long as they respect the rights of others to do the same. And that's because while it may be your right to own a gun, you can use it to harm others, thereby taking away their right to live their lives as they want.

This is not a new tension in America, a republic founded by men with libertarian leanings that has always struggled to strike the right balance between rights for one and safety for all.

The first settlers fled the big hand of Mother England, seeking a smaller government to protect basic freedoms ? and founding a nation built on the "inalienable" rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence acknowledged the stress in America's foundation, saying the new country's government would secure those rights, but people would have the authority to alter or abolish it if it were to become "destructive of these ends."

In modern times, libertarianism, which draws from both liberal and conservative influences, has reared its head often in American history ? most recently in today's tea party, which is uncompromising in pursuing a smaller government role in fiscal matters.

These days, 16 to 18 percent of adults in various surveys identify themselves as libertarians. But many more have libertarian views on individual issues even as they call themselves Republicans, Democrats or independents. It also can be a generational thing, with a Pew Research Center poll in December 2011 finding that 50 percent of Americans under age 30 had positive reaction to the label compared with only 25 percent of senior citizens.

The debate now under way underscores how different guns are from other social issues ? how this topic is not just about you, but about us.

There is a thicket of considerations. The fact that many people view gun ownership as a foundational right. Mental health. Urban vs. rural matters. Sports. Crime. Violence in video games and movies. Parental responsibility. "We know," President Barack Obama said, "this is a complex issue that stirs deeply held passions and political divides."

The multiple factors at play ? and the loss of young innocents ? could explain why, despite the nation's recent libertarianism on cultural matters, the Newtown, Conn., killings quickly spurred calls from across the political spectrum for at least a discussion of whether new limits should be placed on guns. This suggested a possible expansion of government in this realm.

"This awful massacre of our youngest children has changed us, and everything should be on the table," said Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. And Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, the senior Republican on the committee that would take up any legislation, said: "You've got to take all these things into consideration."

The NRA, the nation's largest gun-rights lobby, has promised opposition to more regulations, just as it helped ensure the federal assault weapons ban wasn't renewed in 2004 and state gun laws were loosened by legislatures.

Advocates for gay marriage, marijuana legalization and abortion rights also all have made significant recent strides. Each has pushed legislation in states with friendly political environments while also taking advantage of the country's changing mindset.

Consider that in the last election:

?Washington, Maryland and Maine became the first states ever to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote. Now nine states and the District of Columbia recognize gay unions.

?Washington state and Colorado voted to legalize recreational marijuana use, and Obama's administration signaled it wouldn't pursue those users, even though the drug is illegal under federal law.

?Several Republicans who took rigid stands against abortion rights lost. Among them: GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Then, only six weeks after the election, came Sandy Hook. And gun control jumped to the front of the national conversation.

In the days and weeks before, lawmakers in the GOP-led states of Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and Pennsylvania considered proposals to loosen restrictions on employees keeping guns in their vehicles on work property, and Ohio's legislature passed a law allowing guns to be left in parked vehicles underneath the Statehouse.

A federal appeals court in Illinois struck down a ban on carrying concealed weapons, while Florida's GOP-led administration announced that 1 million people would soon have valid permits to carry them. Michigan's legislature also approved laws easing restrictions, though its Republican governor, Rick Snyder, later vetoed a measure allowing certain gun owners to carry concealed weapons in public places.

Public opinion polling has illustrated the trend since 2000, with more Americans now generally favoring the right to own guns over increased limitations on ownership. But there is also widespread support in surveys for reinstating the federal assault weapons ban and for limiting high-powered magazines.

It is, for sure, a contradictory series of messages ? unsurprising for an issue that asks such an intricate question: In a world of weaponry unimaginable to the people who came up with the Second Amendment, how do you strike the right balance between the individual's right to bear arms and the government's role in protecting the public?

With the latest eruption of the gun debate, we've returned to the enduring fight over libertarian principles that we've kept going for more than 200 years ? the core tension between what's right for one of us and what's right for all of us.

Whatever happens with gun control in the aftermath of Newtown, the debate reveals what this generation faces as it tries to shape the nation it inherits: the enduring struggle to understand that delicate constitutional space that exists between my right to swing my arm around freely and your right not to be hit in the face.

'The Hobbit' trumps 'Les Mis' at box office

By Ronald Grover and Chris Michaud, Reuters

The dwarfs and elves of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" prevailed at the North American box office again over the weekend, as its $32.9 million in ticket sales topped both the star-packed musical "Les Miserables" and the western "Django Unchained."

James Fisher / Reuters

Actor Martin Freeman is shown in a scene from the film "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Despite surging past "The Hobbit" on Christmas day with an $18.1 million opening, "Les Mis" managed only third place in U.S. and Canadian sales with $28 million as Christmas shoppers returned from the malls to boost Hollywood's box office, according to studio estimates.

"The Hobbit," in its third week of release, has now grossed $222.7 million domestically, Warner Bros said.

Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," a western starring Jamie Fox as a slave turned bounty hunter, took second with an impressive $30.7 million.

Tom Cruise's crime drama "Jack Reacher," a film that features author Lee Child's former military investigator solving a fatal sniper attack, landed in fifth with $14 million, outpaced by "Parental Guidance," the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler as grandparents comedy, which took in $14.8 million to nab the fourth spot.

2011 ? 2012 Michigan House and Senate ... - Real Estate 411

The 2011-2012 Michigan House and Senate legislative sessions have wrapped up, yielding some long-fought and well-earned legislative victories for the Michigan Association of REALTORS?. These victories are made possible by the dedication of REALTOR? members across the State:

Appraisal Management Companies-House Bills 4975 & 5271 were introduced in Michigan to be incompliance with federal financial reforms, which require state regulation of AMC?s. The legislation defines, regulates and set penalties for AMC?s operating in Michigan.

Building Inventory Tax Relief-This legislation provides property tax exemptions to inventory and spec homes in new developments. The new law provides new builds and inventory in development with a lower tax assessment until those properties are occupied.

Principal Residence Exemption-The new law alleviates those situations where a person may enter an assisted living facility, (with intentions of returning to their property), leaving their principal residence unoccupied and subject to a higher tax liability.

Principal Residence Enhancement Legislation-This fair, honest and sound property tax reform allows two dates for homebuyers to file for and receive their principal residence exemption, June 1st and November 1st. It also prevents foreclosures from losing their principal residence exemption, making it easier to qualify buyers and moving inventory.

90-Day Foreclosure Extension-The new law extends the 90-day foreclosure to June 30, 2013. This timeframe is important for homeowners as it allows them to meet with the lenders to try and work out a loan modification. It is anticipated that the new legislature will be looking to make changes to the State?s overall foreclosure process in the first 6 months of 2013.
Personal Property Tax Phase-Out-Legislation was passed by the Legislature providing the framework for the phase out of the PPT. This phase-out gives Michigan a clearer path for economic growth and moves the state up the ranks in terms of job competitiveness.
MSHDA Changes-Legislation was recently signed into law that keep the Michigan State Housing Developmemt Authority current and competitive with loan products available to low and moderate income homebuyers across the State.
Legislation Defeated-Occasionally, MAR must work hard to defeat legislation that is not in the best interest of its membership and/or the rights of private property owners. Legislation, which was aimed to exempt persons engaged in ?residential property management? from licensure as real estate brokers/salespersons, was defeated!

Sports Year in Review: Bulldawgs win another state football championship

Click photo to enlarge

The Las Cruces Bulldawgs celebrate their 2012 State Football Championship.

LAS CRUCES ? Earlier this month the Las Cruces High football team won their seventh state championship in program history - the Bulldawgs' fifth under head coach Jim Miller.

"Times have changed and as coaches, we have to change," said Miller, whose 2012 team finished the season 11-1. "I'm a father figure to a lot of these kids now."

Las Cruces won its first state championship since 2008, beating Sandia 35-28 on Dec. 7 in Albuquerque.

"They wanted it so much at the beginning of the year," Miller said. "Doing what they did against a great Sandia football team, it shows a lot of character from these seniors."

The Bulldawgs were led by senior quarterback Jonathan Joy, who accounted for four touchdowns against Sandia. The Bulldawgs needed everyone however, as Sandia stormed back after trailing 21-0.

"We looked up, we had eight minutes left to pound the ball and let the clock run out," said tight end Kamryn Dixon. "We got in the huddle and coach has been preaching it to us all year: One heartbeat. It paid off."

Las Cruces High's lone loss of the season came in September on the road to Rio Rancho. The Bulldawgs ended the regular season with a 36-13 victory over Mayfield to win their 10th district championship.

As the year went on, and Joy became more comfortable, the Bulldawgs were unstoppable offensively. Las Cruces put 70 points up on Clovis in the quarterfinals and scored 55 points against Eldorado in the semifinals.

"The only time we've hurt ourselves is

with our own mistakes," Las Cruces tight end Sam Denmark said. "If we all execute we know nothing can stop us. The only thing that can stop us is ourselves."

Miller improved to 5-0 in state championship games, keeping the Bulldawgs on track after entering the season as one of few favorites.

New Mexico's state playoff system is set up where after the first round, teams owe one another based on playoff history. For teams who have had success in the past, it causes the playoff road to be that much more difficult to win a title. Las Cruces was on the road for two of its three title games, making the 2012 title that much more difficult but perhaps the road will be easier next time the Bulldawgs contend.

Romo and Dallas battle RG3 and Washington for the NFC East title Sunday night (NBC)

Image: Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will try to outduel Redskins counterpart Robert Griffin III for the NFC East title Sunday.Reuters file; AP file

ANALYSIS

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 1:27 a.m. ET Dec. 29, 2012

Greg Bedard

After 255 games, the NFL regular season will come down to one of the league?s most historically intense rivalries ? Cowboys at Redskins ? on Sunday Night Football.

The NFC East title is on the line, and with it, an automatic berth into the postseason. The Cowboys have to win to claim their first postseason berth since 2009. The Redskins could lose and still return to the playoffs for the first time since 2007, but only if the Bears and Vikings drop their earlier games.

Both teams enter the game hot. The Redskins have won six straight, while the Cowboys have won four of six.

Not a bad setting for the 106th edition of this rivalry.

"When you think about the Cowboys and Redskins, it's always been a rivalry," Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware said. "Now there's a little bit more at stake. This is like a statement game, one of those games where you can prove to a lot of people no matter what goes on with your team, guys being (injured), you can get a win. You can still play well because it's a team game. It's not just one player out there playing."

There is probably more pressure on the Cowboys (8-7) than the Redskins (9-6). This is the third time in five years Dallas has faced a win-and-in scenario on the road in its final game. Each previous time, not only have the Cowboys lost, they?ve completely flamed out: 44-6 vs. Philadelphia in 2008 and 31-14 vs. the New York Giants (31-14) last year.

Naturally, most fans are expecting the same old Cowboys to show up at FedEx Field, something the players are keenly aware of.

?It can?t be the same ol? story,? tight end Jason Witten said. ?It?s hard to get in this situation and play for a division title. It?s a great opportunity for us. Hopefully those past experiences have helped develop us so we can be better in this situation. But it is, it?s a different experience. Obviously, different opponent and it?s going to be a tough challenge.?

For the Redskins, this is uncharted territory for many of their players, including standout rookie quarterback Robert Griffith III.

"For guys like myself (and) the other rookies, we're fresh into this rivalry," Griffin said. "But we can definitely sense how the fans feel, how some of the guys who have been here for many years feel about the Cowboys, and that's the mindset we have to take on. We're doing it for them. We're doing it for the fans."

One more go ?round for the NFL and the NFC East. Time to see who wants to keep playing. This is more than a statement game, this is a defining game for those that enter.

A look at the three keys for each team heading in Sunday night?s game:

COWBOYS
Stop Alfred Morris:
Everyone knows how dangerous of a weapon Griffin can be because you have to fear the run and the pass with him. The Cowboys need to do everything they can to make the Redskins more predictable and one-dimensional, and that means you need to them in bad down and distance situations, particularly on third down.

You do that by stopping rookie running back Alfred Morris, who has 1,413 yards. In the first matchup against the Cowboys, Morris had 113 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. He?s had at least 20 carries in the Redskins? last seven games.

Limiting Morris is going to be a tough chore for the Cowboys because they?re so beat up. Nose tackle Jay Ratliff is out, and outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware (elbow/shoulder) will have limited reps. Ware will gut it through, but it might not be enough with down to backups Dan Connor, Ernie Sims and Alex Albright at inside linebacker. Sims is questionable after dealing with a concussion.

If Morris is able to run wild and set up Griffin, the rest might not matter.

Grind it out through the air: Because the Redskins are so dynamic offensively and the Cowboys are so beat up, the Cowboys would greatly benefit by winning the time of possession battle. You usually do that on the ground, but the Cowboys are so anemic running the ball ? DeMarco Murray has averaged 3.7 yards per carry since returning from a foot injury.

And he?ll be facing the fifth-ranked Redskins rush defense (95.5 yards per game), that it will be up to quarterback Tony Romo to control the game by throwing it. Romo has been hot in December ? 66.4 completion percentage, 1,328 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception ? so they need to ride him again.

Keep throwing: The combination of Romo to receiver Dez Bryant has been on fire with 10 touchdowns in the past seven games, including last Sunday?s nine-catch, 224-yard and two-touchdown performance against the Saints. Bryant had eight catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the Thanksgiving game against the Redskins.

Washington doesn?t really have anybody to cover Bryant. DeAngelo Hall couldn?t contain him last year, so they tried Josh Wilson this year to no avail. The Redskins could also try rookie Richard Crawford, or the unheralded D.J. Johnson, who had a rough game against the Eagles last week. Even the safety play has been spotty.

In short, Romo and the Cowboys should be able to throw against the Redskins and make some plays, provided the improved offensive line gives him the opportunity.

REDSKINS
Make Romo eat elsewhere: The Cowboys will want to pass, and Romo will try to feed Bryant and tight end Jason Witten. Don?t let them. Double-team Bryant with a safety over the top, and pound/re-route Witten as soon as he breaks off the line.

Make Romo try to beat you throwing to unreliable Miles Austin, Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris, and with checkdowns to backs DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones.

The odds are strong that Romo and the Cowboys won?t be able to outpoint the Redskins that way.

Block Anthony Spencer: Cowboys right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware gets all the accolades, which he should as a perennial All-Pro with 11.5 sacks this season. But left outside linebacker Anthony Spencer has been very good of late as he finished his contract before becoming a free agent.

Ware will wear a brace on his injured right shoulder and have his reps limited, so it will be up to Spencer to pick up the pace. He?s a big key against the Redskins? read-option run game, and has done a great job in that area this season. Spencer is also an emerging pass rusher.

The Redskins are a bit weak at right tackle with starter Tyler Polumbus (concussion) cleared but questionable. Backup Maurice Hurt had some issues last week against the Eagles that he can?t afford against a talent like Spencer.

Don?t stop attacking: The Redskins led the Cowboys 28-3 on Thanksgiving and nearly blew the game. Dallas has made a living out of falling behind early and then rallying for either victory or a close defeat.

The Redskins must continue to put distance between themselves and the Cowboys, because once Romo gets in a groove, he?s hard to stop.

In 1989, firefighter shooter wondered if he might kill

By Tom Winter, NBC News

Monroe County Sheriff's Office via Reuters

William Spengler spent 17 years in prison for murder.

Nine years after brutally slaying his 92-year-old grandmother with a hammer, the man who opened fire on volunteer firefighters on Christmas Eve in upstate New York told a parole board in 1989 that he was worried he might kill again if freed, according to court documents.

?If you were capable of it once, are you capable of it again?" William Spengler wondered out loud at an Oct. 3, 1989, parole hearing, according to state criminal records released by the New York Department of Corrections in the wake of Monday?s shooting.?

"There is no reason why it should have happened,? he told commission members. ?It makes no sense whatsoever. You know, hindsight is a great thing but it does no good."?

That exchange, which occurred at one in a series of parole board hearings from 1989-?97, took on added significance in the aftermath of the Christmas Eve attack, in which authorities say the 62-year-old Spengler set his home in Webster, N.Y., afire and then shot volunteer firefighters who came to put it out. Two firefighters were killed and three others, including a police officer, were seriously injured. Spengler then killed himself as police closed in.

The documents offer little insight into Spengler?s mental state leading up to the Dec. 24 attack, except to demonstrate that he unable to comprehend why he killed the first time.

Spengler frequently quarreled with the parole board members during the hearings, disputing how many times he struck his grandmother with the hammer in the July 18, 1980, attack, for example

Woman charged in connection with New York firefighter shootings

He also blamed his grandmother for precipitating the attack by hitting him in the groin, and said he only had the hammer because he was preparing to board up a basement door to prevent his grandmother from going to the cellar.

The parole board unanimously denied Spengler?s release in 1989, and subsequent boards did the same for six years, through 1997, when members said that ?the extreme serious nature of your crime, the brutal beating of a 92-year-old grandmother with a hammer continues to militate against discretionary release."

It is unclear what led to Spengler?s release the following year. After spending 18 years behind bars he was well within the sentencing guidelines ? between 8 1/3 and 25 years. But authorities could have held him another seven years. ?

The state Department of Corrections provided this statement in response to an inquiry by NBC News.

"The last time he appeared before the Board was 1997.? He was conditionally released in 1998 as matter of law and remained under community supervision until the end of his sentence in 2006."

Charles Barkley Slavery Joke: Former NBA Great Goes There On TNT's 'Inside The NBA' (VIDEO)

Charles Barkley has never been a stranger to controversy, and Thursday night was no exception. During TNT's NBA halftime show, "Inside the NBA," the former basketball legend cracked a joke that caused many to take notice due to its reference to slavery.

When co-host Kenny Smith asked him to name his favorite president, Barkley gave an interesting, if not slightly awkward, answer.

"I love President Obama, but Abe Lincoln is my new favorite president," Barkley said. "You know why? Because if it weren't for him, we'd be calling Ernie 'boss.'"

Barkley was referring to co-host Ernie Johnson, the only white anchor on the panel, which also includes Smith and Shaquille O'Neal. The joke elicited laughter from both Smith and Shaq, while Johnson tried to change the subject, only to have the Big Aristotle revert back to calling him "boss."

While some on Twitter found the joke amusing, others thought it to be in poor taste:

Ben Manning

Charles Barkley's slavery joke was very solid. Hahaha.

John Connor
I love Barkley. No filter. Nothing off limits. ?@Deadspin: This Charles Barkley slavery joke presented without comment http://t.co/umRsZrOl?
Brett Alexander
Wondering your thoughts on Barkley. It's not in a movie, but it is making light of slavery on cable tv. http://t.co/DUYafyOW
Steve Lindsay

Charles Barkley makes a joke about slavery on national tv. Never a good idea.

The joke brings up the question of whether sports shows are an appropriate venue to discuss sensitive and complicated issues such as race in the first place.

The question was posed by HuffPost blogger B.J. Garrison last week in a post responding to the Rob Parker-RGIII controversy.

"Why is a discussion of racial identity necessary on a sports talk show?" Garrison asked. "What does any of this have to do with ... football?"

However, in reference to Barkely's remarks, SportsGrid's Glenn Davis notes that "not everyone could have pulled off such a joke."

"Yeah, most shows wouldn?t dare go there at all: but this [one's] willingness to do just that is what?s always separated [the show] from its peers," he wrote.

Business Insider's Cork Gaines seems to agree.

"The reason why the show is so good is because they are not afraid to push the limits of what should or should not be said on television. And because of that, you are often left wondering if they just went too far," he wrote.

Do you think Barkley's joke was funny or offensive? Let us know in the comments.

Cowboys' Brent BAC More Than Twice Legal Limit At Time Of Fatal ...

DALLAS (AP) ? Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was driving with a suspended license and had a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit at the time of the car crash that killed teammate and friend Jerry Brown, according to documents released by police Thursday.

The 24-year-old Brent was tested after the crash in the early hours of Dec. 8 at 0.189 percent, well above the Texas limit of 0.08. One police report said Brent was intoxicated, driving over the speed limit and swerving out of one lane when he struck a curb in Irving, a suburb of Dallas, causing the car to flip over.

The crash report also says Brent was driving with an expired and suspended driver?s license obtained in Illinois, where he pleaded guilty three years ago to driving under the influence, a misdemeanor.

Brown was pronounced dead at a Dallas hospital. Brent was arrested and indicted Wednesday on one count of intoxication manslaughter. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, though he could also receive probation. Brent is free on $100,000 bond and required to wear an alcohol monitor. His attorney, George Milner, did not return a phone message left Thursday morning.

Authorities say they also found an unopened bottle of Cognac liquor in searching Brent?s Mercedes sedan, along with ?multiple receipts? and his iPad and cellphone. Brent and Brown reportedly spent at least part of Friday night at the club Privae Dallas. The iPad and cellphone found in the Mercedes have information ?from the events prior to and during the crash that will aid this investigation,? other warrants said.

The 25-year-old Brown was on the Cowboys practice squad and played with Brent at the University of Illinois. The two men have been described as close friends. Brent has been placed on the NFL reserve/non-football illness list and won?t play again this season.

No court dates in his case have been scheduled.

Heath Harris, the first assistant Dallas County district attorney, said prosecutors hoped to turn over evidence to Milner as soon as possible. He said he wanted to have the case tried ?as quickly as possible.?

?It has the potential to send a strong message about how we feel about our intoxication laws,? Harris said.

Newsmakers 2012: Women's issues take center stage | PennLive.com

Some women felt they were under attack in 2012.

Susan Komen For The Cure The Susan Komen For The Cure international headquarters are shown in the Dallas suburb of Addison, Texas, Friday, Feb. 3, 2012. After three days of controversy, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity says reversed its decision to cut breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood. (AP Photo/LM Otero)? ?
Christine Toretti Christine Toretti, Republican National Committee, cautioned that the GOP was alienating women. VICKI VELLIOS BRINER,
The Patriot-News

The GOP was accused of waging a war on women last year. Plenty of Republicans ? and yes, Republican women ? said that was actually a Democratic ploy designed to raise money in an election year.

Nonetheless, several women?s issues emerged front and center in 2012.

Following the lead of other states, Pennsylvania lawmakers considered a bill requiring women to have an ultrasound before getting an abortion. The bill also called for an image of the fetus to be shown on a monitor.

Gov. Tom Corbett garnered national attention and criticism when he said that women didn?t have to look at the monitor to see the fetus. He said a woman simply has to ?close your eyes.?

Democrats pounded Corbett for the remark. Corbett?s support of the bill earned support from some conservatives, but even some Republicans said they were disappointed by Corbett's comments.

The bill was sponsored by a woman: State Rep. Kathy Rapp, R-Warren County. But the legislation was later put on the shelf when it became clear it wouldn?t get support.

As Republican presidential candidates battled over abortion in the fight for the GOP nomination, some cautioned that the emphasis on social issues was creating a gender gap. ?This primary process has really alienated a lot of women across the country,? Christine Toretti, a key player in the Republican National Committee, told The Patriot-news.

The battle over birth control also made news in 2012, and the issue broke party lines.

Conservatives, Catholics in particular, fought a provision in President Barack Obama?s health care reform law requiring health insurance plans to pay for contraception. At one point, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr., D-Pa., and other Democrats urged the White House to reconsider.

Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh also received criticism for calling a Georgetown University student a ?slut? for testifying before Congress about the need for access to contraceptives. Limbaugh later apologized.

Planned Parenthood was again the target of some lawmakers. State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Butler County, pushed legislation to keep taxpayer money away from the group. He argues that Planned Parenthood doesn't deserve state money because it provides abortion services and referrals.

Another flap involving Planned Parenthood arose early in the year when Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced plans to cut funding for the group. Facing a huge backlash fueled by social media, Komen, a top breast cancer charity, quickly reversed its decision.

?We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives,? a Komen statement said.

Emilia Clarke Recalls Awkward 'Game of Thrones' Convo

Emilia Clarke knows she's lucky to have a starring role on HBO's hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, but after two years it's not her impressive acting skills that she's best known for as much as her propensity for being naked -- especially in the show's first season.

5 Tips for Choosing an Online Marketing Specialist | Virtual Assistant ...

Online Marketing SpecialistOnline Marketing is one of the most effective ways to generate new customers and profits for your local business. This is primarily due to the fact that most consumers go online to search for local products, services, and businesses that can provide what they?re looking for.

However, business owners are busy actually ?running their businesses?? so they have very little time to implement online marketing strategies all on their own. First, they would have to spend a great deal of time learning the ins and outs of each method. Then, they would have to thoroughly implement, test, track, and refine those methods on an ongoing basis if they want to get the best results.

As you can imagine, this would be a huge, daunting task for any business owner to take on. However, it does not mean that internet marketing should be ignored or avoided ? that would be a huge mistake.

Instead, business owners must find the appropriate resources and help to get the job done. But many of them prolong the process because they still haven?t found an Online Marketing Specialist that they know, like, and trust with their marketing efforts.

Here are 5 tips to help you choose an Online Marketing Specialist:

1. Set-up an appointment with them to get to know them. You probably receive tons of phone calls, emails, and direct mail pieces from online marketing specialists all over the world.? If you?re struggling to move forward with your online marketing initiatives simply because you?re stuck on choosing a consultant, go ahead and break the ice.

Once you start a dialogue with someone, you can truly get a feel for whether or not that person is right for you.? Have a list of questions that are important to you and pay close attention to their answers. Within just a few minutes of speaking with someone, you should be able to figure out whether or not they really have your business?s best interest at hand.

2. Make sure they understand ?local? online marketing. There are some online marketing consultants who will try to sell you tools and systems that do not help at all when it comes to getting more ?local? online exposure.? So be sure to ask them if they specialize in ?local? marketing.

3. Make sure they fully analyze your particular situation and can provide recommendations. Beware of marketing consultants who jump the gun and try to sell you something right off the bat. A professional consultant will ask you some detailed questions about your business so they can provide the most effective, targeted solutions that will help you get more local online visibility.

4. Make sure they can help you with various areas of online marketing ? not just one. Some marketing consultants are focused on selling shiny objects; but in order to really make the internet work for you, there are several things you must do. For instance, a beautiful website is nothing if you?re not getting any traffic to that website. Likewise, a bunch of traffic is nothing if you don?t have effective conversion tools on your website that will turn visitors into customers.

5. Ask about pricing so you know what to expect. Just keep in mind that ?cheaper price? could end up meaning ?lack of service? ? you get what you pay for most of the time. On the other hand, don?t assume that just because someone is charging premium prices that they will provide premium services.

As you can see, there are several factors to consider before choosing an Online Marketing specialist. But don?t let your own fears stop you from moving forward; instead, choose someone to help you so you can finally get in front of local consumers online.

Starbucks to use cups to send "fiscal cliff" message to lawmakers

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp will use its ubiquitous coffee cups to tell U.S. lawmakers to come up with a deal to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff" and triggering automatic tax hikes and spending cuts.

Chief Executive Howard Schultz is urging workers in Starbucks' roughly 120 Washington-area shops to write "come together" on customers' cups on Thursday and Friday, as U.S. President Barack Obama and lawmakers return to work and attempt to revive fiscal cliff negotiations that collapsed before the Christmas holiday.

Starbucks' cup campaign aims to send a message to sharply divided politicians and serve as a rallying cry for the public in the days leading up to lawmakers' January 1 deadline to deliver a plan to avert harsh across-the-board government spending reductions and tax increases that could send the United States back into recession.

"We're paying attention, we're greatly disappointed in what's going on and we deserve better," Schultz told Reuters in a telephone interview.

The CEO said he has joined a growing list of high-powered business leaders, politicians and financial experts in endorsing the Campaign to Fix the Debt, (www.fixthedebt.org) a well-funded nonpartisan group that is leaning on lawmakers to put the United States' financial house in order.

Starbucks plans to amplify its "come together" message via new and old media, including Twitter and Facebook posts, coverage on AOL's local news websites and advertisements in The Washington Post and The New York Times.

"If (talks) do not progress, we will make this much bigger," Schultz said of the messaging campaign.

Schultz is no stranger to using the world's biggest coffee chain as a platform to advocate for more political cooperation in Washington.

During the debt ceiling debate in August 2011, he made a splash by calling for a boycott of political contributions to U.S. lawmakers until they struck a fair and bipartisan deal on the country's debt, revenue and spending.

"We are facing such dysfunction, irresponsibility and lack of leadership" less than two years after the debt ceiling crisis, Schultz said.

Washington narrowly avoided a U.S. government default, but not before down-to-the-wire wrangling prompted the country's first-ever debt rating downgrade.

"There is something so wrong that we can be here again and not have the ability to put party aside for the betterment of the country," said Schultz. "We have the same language and rhetoric. Unfortunately we aren't learning much."

(AP) ? The big deal for Hollywood is not the record $10.8 billion that studios took in domestically in 2012. It's the fact that the number of tickets sold went up for the first time in three years.

Thanks to inflation, revenue generally rises in Hollywood as admission prices climb each year. The real story is told in tickets, whose sales have been on a general decline for a decade, bottoming out in 2011 at 1.29 billion, their lowest level since 1995.

The industry rebounded this year, with ticket sales projected to rise 5.6 percent to 1.36 billion by Dec. 31, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. That's still well below the modern peak of 1.6 billion tickets sold in 2002, but in an age of cozy home theater setups and endless entertainment gadgets, studio executives consider it a triumph that they were able to put more butts in cinema seats this year than last.

"It is a victory, ultimately," said Don Harris, head of distribution at Paramount Pictures. "If we deliver the product as an industry that people want, they will want to get out there. Even though you can sit at home and watch something on your large screen in high-def, people want to get out."

Domestic revenue should finish up nearly 6 percent from 2011's $10.2 billion and top Hollywood's previous high of $10.6 billion set in 2009.

The year was led by a pair of superhero sagas, Disney's "The Avengers" with $623 million domestically and $1.5 billion worldwide and the Warner Bros. Batman finale "The Dark Knight Rises" with $448 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide. Sony's James Bond adventure "Skyfall" is closing in on the $1 billion mark globally, and the list of action and family-film blockbusters includes "The Hunger Games," ''The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part Two," ''Ice Age: Continental Drift," ''Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," ''The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Brave."

Before television, movies were the biggest thing going, with ticket sales estimated as high as 4 billion a year domestically in the 1930s and '40s.

Movie-going eroded steadily through the 1970s as people stayed home with their small screens. The rise of videotape in the 1980s further cut into business, followed by DVDs in the '90s and big, cheap flat-screen TVs in recent years. Today's video games, mobile phones and other portable devices also offer easy options to tramping out to a movie theater.

It's all been a continual drain on cinema business, and cynics repeatedly predict the eventual demise of movie theaters. Yet Hollywood fights back with new technology of its own, from digital 3-D to booming surround-sound to the clarity of images projected at high-frame rates, which is being tested now with "The Lord of the Rings" prelude "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," shown in select theaters at 48 frames a second, double the standard speed.

For all of the annoyances of theaters ? parking, pricy concessions, sitting next to strangers texting on their iPhones ? cinemas still offer the biggest and best way to see a movie.

"Every home has a kitchen, but you can't get into a good restaurant on Saturday night," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. "People want to escape. That's the nature of society. The adult population just is not going to sit home seven days a week, even though they have technology in their home that's certainly an improvement over what it was 10 years ago. People want to get out of the house, and no matter what they throw in the face of theatrical exhibition, it continues to perform at a strong level."

Even real-life violence at the movie theater didn't turn audiences away. Some moviegoers thought twice about heading to the cinema after a gunman killed 12 people and injured 58 at a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado last summer, but if there was any lull in attendance, it was slight and temporary. Ticket sales went on a tear for most of the fall.

While domestic revenues inch upward most years largely because of inflation, the real growth areas have been overseas, where more and more fans are eager for the next Hollywood blockbuster.

Rentrak, which compiles international box office data, expects 2012's foreign gross to be about $23 billion, 3 percent higher than in 2011. No data was yet available on the number of tickets sold overseas this past year.

International business generally used to account for less than half of a studio film's overall receipts. Films now often do two or even three times as much business overseas as they do domestically. Some movies that were duds with U.S. audiences, such as "Battleship" and "John Carter," can wind up being $200 million hits with overseas crowds.

Whether finishing a good year or a bad one, Hollywood executives always look ahead to better days, insisting that the next crop of blockbusters will be bigger than ever. The same goes this time as studio bosses hype their 2013 lineup, which includes the latest "Iron Man," ''Star Trek," ''Hunger Games" and "Thor" installments, the Superman tale "Man of Steel" and the second chapter in "The Hobbit" trilogy.

Twelve months from now, they hope to be talking about another revenue record topping this year's $10.8 billion.

"I've been saying we're going to hit that $11 billion level for about three years now," said Paul Dergarabedian, a box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Next year I think is the year we actually do it."

Ability to Metabolize Tamoxifen Affects Breast Cancer Outcomes ...

For nearly a decade, breast cancer researchers studying tamoxifen hormone therapy have been divided as to whether genetic differences in a liver enzyme affect the drug?s effectiveness and the likelihood breast cancer will recur. A new study by researchers from the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center provides evidence that genetic differences in the enzyme CYP2D6 play a key role in how well tamoxifen works.

?Our findings confirm that, in early breast cancer treated with tamoxifen, genetic alterations in CYP2D6 lead to a higher likelihood of recurrence and death,? says Mayo Clinic oncologist Matthew Goetz, M.D., lead author of the study in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

In the clinical trial, Dr. Goetz and his colleagues studied the rates of cancer recurrence and death in two groups: postmenopausal women with primary estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer who received tamoxifen for five years and those who received tamoxifen for two years followed by the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole for three years. Anastrozole is a breast cancer drug whose metabolism does not require the CYP2D6 enzyme.

The study showed that women who were born with genetic alterations of CYP2D6 that abolish the enzyme?s critical metabolizing activity and who took tamoxifen for five years had recurrence of breast cancer, or died at a rate 2.5 times higher than women with normal CYP2D6 enzyme activity. Women with intermediate levels of the CYP2D6 enzyme had rates of recurrence or death 1.7 times higher than women with normal CYP2D6 activity. Importantly, Dr. Goetz notes, that genetic alterations in CYP2D6 did not affect the likelihood of recurrence or death in women who switched to anastrozole after two years of tamoxifen.

?Switching from tamoxifen to an aromatase inhibitor may be one reason for the discrepant studies surrounding CYP2D6 and tamoxifen -- as information about whether a patient took an aromatase inhibitor after tamoxifen was not available in most of the prior studies,? says senior author James Ingle, M.D., of Mayo Clinic, an expert on hormone therapies for breast cancer.

A blood test can determine whether a woman has alterations in CYP2D6 and predict how efficiently her body will convert tamoxifen to endoxifen. Approximately 5 to 7 percent of European and North American populations are considered poor metabolizers of tamoxifen.

?The results of this successful high-level international research collaboration are an important step forward in our quest to individualize breast cancer treatment and provide tailored care to women with breast cancer,? says Michael Gnant, M.D., professor of surgery at the Medical University of Vienna and president of the Austrian study group.

So what should a woman do if she is unable to effectively metabolize tamoxifen into its most active form? Dr. Goetz believes that the current recommendation of switching from tamoxifen to an aromatase inhibitor is likely to result in the greatest benefit in women with decreased CYP2D6 metabolism. For CYP2D6 poor metabolizers, avoiding tamoxifen altogether and starting out with an aromatase inhibitor may be the best approach, he says.

Dr. Goetz?s group is working with the National Cancer Institute to develop endoxifen as an alternative to tamoxifen. If women can be given endoxifen, the active part of tamoxifen, it won?t matter how tamoxifen gets metabolized, he says.
