NEW YORK?-?Crude oil prices rose modestly Friday as worries over Middle East tensions stoked concerns about supply from the oil-rich region.
New York?s main contract, light sweet crude for November, gained 34 cents from Thursday in choppy trade, closing at $92.19 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea crude for November delivery settled at $112.39 a barrel, up 38 cents, after spending part of the session in the red.
Matt Smith at Summit Energy said the oil market was ?very undecided ? we are just trading sideways.? Oil prices, which had jumped sharply Thursday, were still supported ?because of the overhang from the geopolitical rhetoric yesterday and this week from the UN General Assembly, specifically with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu?s comments yesterday,? Smith said.
During his address before the UN, Netanyahu called for a ?clear red line? to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb. He used a red marker pen to draw a line through a cartoon diagram of a bomb to illustrate what the international community?s limit for Iran?s nuclear enrichment program should be.
He said Iran had 70 percent of the necessary uranium for a bomb and warned that at the current pace of enrichment, the Islamic republic could have nearly all the material needed to create a first bomb by next summer. ?Tensions between Iran and the West reinforced concerns about potential supply disruptions,? Phillip Futures said in a market commentary.
?Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew his ?red line? for Iran?s nuclear program in a speech at the United Nations... and voiced confidence the United States shares his view.?

PHILADELPHIA - The hormone prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and then travels via the bloodstream to cells throughout the body, where it exerts multiple reproductive and metabolic effects, most notably on the breast where it is the master regulator of lactation. In recent years researchers have found that prolactin is also produced by some tissues outside the brain, however little is known about the functions of extra-pituitary prolactin or how its production is regulated in these tissues.
Now, the laboratory of Lewis A. Chodosh, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, reports in Genes & Development that activation of the PI3K-Akt oncogenic signaling pathway in the mammary glands of mice rapidly induces cells in the breast itself to produce prolactin. This, in turn, triggers Stat5 activation, mammary epithelial differentiation and milk production in virgin mice within a matter of hours.
"Remarkably, these changes occur in the absence of any of the complex hormonal changes or developmental programs that normally accompany pregnancy" explains Chodosh.
Consistent with a physiological role for prolactin outside of the brain, the Penn team found that mice bearing mutant Akt genes fail to activate Stat5 or initiate lactation when they give birth due to an inability to synthesize and secrete prolactin in the mammary gland, despite normal levels of circulating prolactin in the blood.
These findings provide the first demonstration that the synthesis and secretion of mammary gland prolactin is regulated by PI3K-Akt signaling and identify a physiological function for extra-pituitary prolactin during a critical developmental stage that is essential for the survival of mammalian offspring.
What's more, prolactin has long been thought to play a role in human breast cancer, however this has typically been assumed to be due to circulating prolactin produced by the pituitary. Since the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway is commonly activated in human cancers, this new finding suggests the important possibility that prolactin produced by the breast itself may play a role in breast cancer. In fact, mammary prolactin has been detected in some human breast cancers. As such, investigators have proposed that prolactin produced by the mammary gland rather than by the pituitary may play a direct role in the development of breast cancer, for example by providing pro-growth or pro-survival signals to cancer cells in the breast. Accordingly, anti-cancer drugs aimed at blocking the effects of prolactin are currently under development.
"Since the PI3K-Akt pathway is one of the most commonly activated oncogenic pathways in human cancer, its identification as an upstream regulator of prolactin production in the mammary gland has intriguing potential implications for understanding the pathology of human breast cancer and as well as improving its treatment," notes Chodosh.

The American Military Partner Association (www.MilitaryPartners.org) is the nation's premier support and resource network for the partners/spouses of LGBT servicemembers and veterans. Launched originally in 2009 as the "Campaign for Military Partners" by Servicemembers United, America's gay military organization, this first-of-its-kind initiative grew substantially over the course of the ensuing two years and graduated to become the American Military Partner Association on September 20, 2011 - the day that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law was officially repealed.
Throughout the years of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, gay and lesbian servicemembers were forced to either forego a relationship and a family or go to great lengths to hide their relationships in order to continue to serve in the armed forces. This situation rendered the committed civilian partners of gay and lesbian servicemembers virtually invisible. They could not be acknowledged, they could not be brought to unit or military functions, they could not access spouse and family support networks, and they were denied the family readiness services made available to the spouses and partners of heterosexual troops. This isolation was always particularly devastating when same-sex couples had to move together to rural posts and bases and especially when the active duty servicemember was deployed overseas.
It is this disadvantaged plight that motivated Servicemembers United and the American Military Partner Association to step up back in 2009 and begin to serve this underserved - and often ignored - part of our American military family. In the true historic tradition of military spouses pulling together and figuring out how to support one another on their own during World War II and the Vietnam era, the American Military Partner Association began as an effort to identify, connect, support, and recognize the often ignored and frequently isolated civilian partners of gay and lesbian military personnel. Founded by Servicemembers United in 2009 as a project called the Campaign for Military Partners, the initiative grew to include hundreds and hundreds of military partners across the country and even across the world.
The American Military Partner Association has also worked tirelessly to spread the word about the existence and unique needs of the partners of gay and lesbian servicemembers. Dozens of stories were successfully pitched to major national media outlets, resulting in a national spotlight being continuously shown on these silent heroes for the first time in American history. But simply drawing the public's attention to the plight of isolated and under-supported military partners was only the start of how we have been helping military partners for more than two years.
The American Military Partner Association launched and maintains the website MilitaryPartners.org as the internet's premier information resource for the partners of gay and lesbian servicemembers. We have engaged in a systematic outreach campaign to military partners in order to let them know about our organization and the resources and network now available to them and to make them start to finally feel like a welcomed part of the wider gay and lesbian military community. After proactively building up a membership, we conducted a first-ever survey of military partners in order to identify and explore the unique needs, challenges, and issues they face on a regular basis. This information was aggregated and analyzed, and it formed the basis of an informative, one-of-a-kind report on gay and lesbian military partner and couple issues submitted by Servicemembers United to the Comprehensive Review Working Group on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds threw the season's seventh no-hitter, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Friday night.
The seven no-hitters matches the modern record for most in a season, tying 1990 and 1991. There were eight no-hitters in 1884.
The last no-hitter for the Reds was a perfect game by Tom Browning on Sept. 16, 1988.
Bailey (13-10) walked one and struck out 10. The last out was a popup by Alex Presley and when it was caught Bailey was mobbed near the mound by teammates.

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I just got some shocking news. His father -- age 81 -- is leaving his wife of 60 years! Mom is not entirely self-sufficient and seems dependent on him.Dad found himself a younger woman -- a "chick" of 70. He has announced that he still has sexual needs and wants to enjoy the rest of his life. My husband thinks it will be a short-term fling and he'll return to Mom, but she says she won't be taking him back. (Who knows how she'll feel later?)My problem is, no matter what happens between them, I'm having a hard time even considering forgiving him for his selfishness. ...

Now that he's returned to Earth from a five-month stay on the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Joe Acaba is still getting used to life on the ground.
Acaba landed in Kazakhstan Sept. 16 after riding a Russian Soyuz spaceship back to Earth with two cosmonauts, Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin. The three spaceflyers had just finished stints as crewmembers on the Expedition 32 mission of the International Space Station, which orbits Earth 240 miles (386 km) overhead.
"I'm feeling much better, getting used to it, and better and better every day," Acaba told SPACE.com during an interview Wednesday (Sept. 25). "You forget how strong gravity is when you've been gone for a while."
During his tenure in space, Acaba had a hectic schedule of science experiments, space station upkeeping duties, and hosting the occasional robotic cargo-delivery spacecraft. In fact, Acaba was present for the very first visit of a privately-built vehicle, the Dragon capsule built by Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, Calif., which docked at the space station May 25.
Dragon delivered a load of food, clothes and supplies as a trial run for a series of 12 delivery hauls the company is contracted for by NASA.
"I was pretty fortunate ? I arrived and then four days later, Dragon showed up, and so it was a real busy time for my first part of the increment," Acaba said. "It was very nice to be part of that first docking of a commercial vehicle, and we really enjoyed it, and it was a great milestone." [Video: Joe Acaba Encounters 'The Avengers' and Dragon in Space]
But it wasn't all work and no play in space. Acaba was the mastermind behind the plan to screen the movie "The Avengers" on the space station while he was there. A self-professed comics fan, the astronaut worked with NASA, Marvel Comics and Disney to uplink the film to the orbiting outpost in June.
"It's really nice to have a movie night," Acaba said. "As a crew, we're very integrated. Just like here on Earth, whenever you can get together with family and friends to watch a movie or whatever it may be, it's pretty special, so we enjoyed the movie and we just enjoyed spending time together."
The astronaut gave the movie high grades.
"I thought it was great, but I'm a little biased because I enjoy all the superhero movies, growing up with comics and things like that," he said. "I enjoyed it, and I was very thankful that we were able to get it up there."
Acaba joined NASA in May 2004, and flew to space for the first time on the STS-119 mission of the shuttle Discovery in March 2009. Before becoming an astronaut, Acaba earned a master's degree in geology, and taught in high school and middle school.
"I was a math and science teacher out in Florida, and I think the teaching profession really gets you pretty well qualified to become an astronaut," Acaba said. "It may not seem that way, but schoolteachers every day, they're in a stressful environment, every day is different, and you need to cope with a wide range of people and different experiences."

SpellTower ($1.99), a wonderful iPhone and iPad game, has been featured in our "75 Best iPad Games" and "20 Awesome Full-Screen iPhone 5 Apps" articles. But while writing that latter story, I realized that I had never formally reviewed this wonderful brain parasite of a word game.?
Let's remedy that.
I'll slap 4.5 stars and an Editor's Choice on this addictive little time-waster. SpellTower combines attributes of Boggle and Tetris, but it's the fit and finish, the elegant color scheme and fonts (as shown at right), that really make it stand out from the masses.
SpellTower has a few different modes. In one, you try to draw words formed from letters on a grid. In the others, you draw your words, but the grid builds from the bottom and increases by a line every turn; if it fills up the screen, the game is over. "Rush mode" adds lines every few seconds rather than each turn. Some letters will clear a whole row, and some can't be used unless you're making longer words. As the game goes on, it demands more five- and six-letter words.
The iPhone and iPad versions have different sized grids; the iPad has a larger grid with more rows, making the game longer. The iPhone 5 uses the iPad's grid, so you get to take advantage of all that extra-long-screen goodness.
Multiplayer mode is strictly local, played between phones or iPads connected via Bluetooth. That's fine with me, but online connectivity would be the next logical step here.
Since I'm now playing this game during every commute, why not give it five stars? SpellTower has some minor issues with touch targets on the full-screen iPhone 5 grid. You may have to tap some letters twice. That's all.
If you like spelling, buy SpellTower.

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian billionaires Oleg Deripaska and Michael Cherney reached an 11th-hour settlement in a dispute over a billion dollar slice of aluminium giant RUSAL, shortly before they were due to give evidence in a drawn-out London court case.
The case, which had been expected to run well into 2013, was due to dwell on allegations of broken promises, criminality and mob rule while shining a light on the murky carve-up of lucrative smelters in the 'wild east' of post-Soviet Siberia.
"Mr. Deripaska announces that Mr. Cherney's litigation in London against him has been terminated," a spokesperson for Deripaska said in a brief statement. "Neither party will be making any further comment in relation to the litigation or matters raised therein."
Cherney's team released a nearly identical statement.
Cherney, born in Ukraine, raised in Uzbekistan, Jewish by creed and living in Israel since leaving Russia in 1994, alleged that metals mogul Deripaska reneged on a deal to buy him out of their joint aluminium business, RUSAL.
Well-connected Deripaska, who controls RUSAL and is a survivor of President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on oligarchs who once wielded great political power, denied having had any such business relationship with Cherney. He alleged he was the victim of a protection racket Cherney helped orchestrate - an accusation Cherney denied.
Cherney, who in 2008 won the right to bring his case against Deripaska in London's respected courts - the venue of choice for the warring Russian wealthy - was due to be cross-examined next Tuesday via video-link from Israel. An outstanding arrest warrant relating to a separate money laundering investigation prevents him from travelling to London.
Lawyers were intrigued at the last-minute deal.
"The experience in most of these cases is that they do go to trial because no one is willing to back down," said Philippa Charles, a litigation partner at law firm Mayer Brown.
"So it's interesting that the level of publicity has perhaps focused the minds of both parties on whether or not it is actually worth having their dirty linen washed in public."
THE POWER OF METAL
The Russian aluminium industry, like much of Russia's raw materials sector, came under the control of a few powerful oligarchs during the huge selloff of state assets that followed the collapse of communism and of the Soviet Union in 1991. The brutality of the business rivalry over aluminium smelters gave birth to the term 'aluminium wars'.
Cherney's case against Deripaska had overtones of a recent battle between Russian oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich, which in August helped ensure the concept of "krysha", or roof, was established in English courts.
Berezovsky's claim for $6 billion (3.6 billion pounds) was dismissed and Judge Elizabeth Gloster described him as an 'inherently unreliable witness'. Abramovich had said he had paid money to Berezovsky for 'krysha' services of political cover and protection,
A "krysha", in Russian gangster parlance, can be either a figure who genuinely protects, in return for payment, the interests of a business in a sometimes brutal business world or it can refer to a racketeer extorting money by intimidation. The boundary between the two can, of course, be blurred.
The case, which began in July when both sides published opening statements and lawyers laid out the details of their arguments in front of Judge Andrew Smith, hinged in part on what was agreed in a London hotel 11 year ago.
Cherney and Deripaska agreed they met at the Lanesborough Hotel on a March morning in 2001, that they signed one document and that Deripaska handed Cherney $250 million. Everything else, even exactly when they first met each other, was disputed.
Deripaska says he made the payment to terminate a krysha arrangement with Cherney, partly because his business was now powerful enough, and his security forces strong enough, to confront criminal gangs.
Cherney says he had orally agreed a 50/50 partnership with Deripaska in 1993, which lasted until March 2001. He alleges Deripaska then agreed at the Lanesborough meeting to pay him a preliminary $250 million for his aluminium interests held by Deripaska - and also agreed to buy him out of the remainder of his stake within a few years.
RUSAL, the product of a slew of takeovers and mergers mainly in Siberia, where the hydro-electric power needed to fuel hungry smelters comes cheap, has emerged as Russia's only aluminium producer. Cherney alleged a 13.2 percent stake belongs to him.
Deripaska, a former physics student who started investing in aluminium assets in 1991 who has entertained top British politicians on his 70 million pound yacht, says he was forced into a "krysha" after being threatened by some of the country's most powerful criminal gangs in the mid-1990s.
Stories abound about such "protection" mobs attacking the wives and relatives of those who failed to do their bidding, launching fictitious criminal proceedings, violent takeovers of businesses or simply liquidating rivals and critics.

On April 11, a massive magnitude 8.6 earthquake shook the floor of the Indian Ocean off Sumatra. It wasn't just unusual because of its size ? the 10th largest quake in the last century ? it also set off a series of quakes around the world for up to six days afterward, according to a study published today (Sept. 26) in the journal Nature.
"Until now, we seismologists have always said, 'Don't worry about distant earthquakes triggering local quakes,'" said Roland Burgmann, an earth and planetary scientist at UC Berkeley, in a statement. "This study now says that, while it is very rare ? it may only happen every few decades ? it is a real possibility if the right kind of earthquake happens."
The study found that some quakes were triggered within a few hours, while in other places the seismic waves from the Sumatran quake primed temblors to happen for up to six days later. ?
The findings should remind those living in seismically active areas that the risk from a large earthquake could persist, even on the opposite side of the globe, for more than a few hours, the study scientists said.
Another study also published today suggests that the quake marks the birth of a new tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean.
The temblor was caused by plates slipping past each other, in what's called a strike-slip earthquake. (California's San Andrea fault is perhaps the most famous example of a strike-slip fault.)
"This was one of the weirdest earthquakes we have ever seen," Burgmann said in the statement. "It was like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a strike-slip event, but it was huge ? 15 times more energetic."
The Sumatran earthquake led to a 7.0 quake in Baja California and quakes in Indonesia and Japan, but none of these caused much damage. Worldwide, the seismologists found five times the expected number of quakes during the six days following April 11.
One possible mechanism for the delayed action is that the East Indian Ocean quake triggered a cascade of undetectable micro-quakes on certain faults that led to larger ruptures later on, according to a UC Berkeley release on the study.
Researchers looked at other recent large earthquakes and found that there was only a small increase in the number of earthquakes immediately afterward. That could be due to the unique nature of the Sumatran quake, which generated waves that traveled just under the Earth's surface and were energetic enough to affect distant fault zones.

Member ?Join Date: Sep 2012 Posts: 4 | Is there a point at which recovery gets as "good as it's going to get"? Hello all, new to the forum, was looking for an active place to discuss some concerns I had with my fiance and her drinking. I'll try to keep the backstory as brief but informative as possible. I'm 32, she's about to turn 28. We just got engaged on a trip to San Diego this month. Lived together for 2 years, been together for 3. When we met, I was a social drinker, as single males in their late 20's to be...but she was (is), self-admittedly, an alcoholic. She had gotten a DUI a year before and still had a breathilizer in her car. All these should have set alarm bells off all over my head...but my weakness (my own disorder if you will) is to be attracted to wounded characters. For really the first 2 years, she continued to drink every night. Usually a bottle of wine. When we would go out, she would get blackout. No idea when to stop, always wanting to keep her good feeling going. She never drank in the morning, she never hid anything...in short, except for the nights out, she was more or less a pretty highly functioning alcoholic. We have always been very active people, going to the gym, doing stuff outside or with our dogs. But when she drank she became moody, irrational, depressed and constantly threatened to breakup with me, even though by morning she back to normal usually. Well about a year ago, we went to an NFL game and she got so wasted that I just lost it. I told her things need to change...I've never threatened to break up with her or leave her but have tried to emphasize that I love her and that because of that and my desire to have a long, healthy life with her, there has to be change. So, reluctantly, she quit...cold turkey, for about 3 months. During that time we basically stopped going out and, more importantly, it was after the holidays and during winter so we didn't see much of her family. Her dad is a very high level functioning alcoholic. He's a big-time exec at a big bank but he drinks every day. Her friends all drink. Most of my friends drink. So we basically stayed hibernated for winter. Well, weather starts turning nicer and she's getting cabin fever and so she says she'd like to start going out to dinner a few times a week again, hanging out with family and friends again. She admits she cannot be around all that temptation without drinking but says she'll take it easy. Yeah, I know, I am naive but when she's being sweet and responsible sounding, it is hard to say no. I do at least draw one boundary line in the sand and say there will be no drinking at home. No sitting around at night blowing through a bottle of wine (or any level of alcohol). So we start to go out more and gradually she starts to drink more. The last 6 months have basically seen it level off at 3 drinks for her when we go out to dinner or with friends, which is about 3-4 nights a week. Then every couple of months she'll have a really bad night where we go out with a bunch of her friends and like usual, even if she sets her own limit, she has no concept of how to enforce it once the first drink hits her mouth. Bottom line is this...although she's highly functional and although the situation seems to have plateaued and she is certainly much better than she was the first couple of years...it still bothers me that she has a dependency. She now tries to convince me that we need to go out to dinner a lot..."oh let's go here I'm craving some sushi!" to appeal to me when in reality she simply wants a few glasses of wine. Or we'll go to an art fair and she'll say "let's leave by 4" and 4 rolls around and she's begging to stay longer...because she wants to drink more wine. I feel like I am always going to be second most important to drinking for her even though I know she loves me to pieces. Her side of the story is that she is much better than she used to be, that she has improved so much just for me (she has...but maybe the problem is she didn't improve for herself?) and that she does go 3 or 4 nights (more like 2-3 in reality) a week without drinking. I continue to push her to deal with the depdency and we continue to get into arguements. It's to that end that I've grown fatigued and basically am asking myself..."we have more-or-less a great life, we love each other...she does drink 3-4 nights a week...but is it really worth fighting at this point"? Should I just be thankful for what I have not try to mold this perfect spouse with no chemical dependencies? Am I simply guilting her for no real reason now? |

It won't get better without abstaining completely and working a program, and it wont stay the same. She will get worse. In my experience, its common for alcoholics to think they are in control if they don't drink daily or stop after some predetermined amount. At some point, their perceived control goes out the window and they continue to make excuses. It's a hard life. Know what you are getting into. Listen to your gut. |

At 28 she's relatively healthy & her body & mind are better able to handle the abuse she is inflicting on it. So much so that she probably doesn't really, fully feel the effects of the drinking. She's not just saying she's in control, she probably honestly thinks that she is. But her reality is skewed. What kind of future do you envision? Kids? Are you prepared for what that means with an alcoholic spouse? I'm not sure how long you've been here at SR, but there is SO much information here that can help you. Jump in & start by reading all the stickies, very educational!

![]() Yeah I think we want one kid eventually...she claims that when she becomes pregnant she will just stop drinking...and part of me wants to believe it because if there's something she is as dependent on as alcohol it is the need to be healthy (in every other way but that...I know there is some irony in that statement). But in the end, I suppose that claim of hers right now, even though she believes it, will be quite difficult to hold up when it comes time to pay the piper.

Is that how you want to live the rest of your life? You are young, intelligent, and like most of us, in love. But trying to fix/manipulate/control her drinking - is not the answer. My Wife has 'slowed down' as well, but the marriage and how I feel about it have not changed. I never know when the next 'a little too much' will happen and if I don't spot it fastenough coming on, I will be berated and told what a worthless POS I am and how I've ruined the marriage. Trust me, this is not a great way to live. Good Luck to you. Just think about what other say who have been down this ugly road before. Welcome to SR, it's been a life-changing place for me. |

But then she got right back into it, and even started doing it more. Having a child is stressful on everyone, even a non-alkie. Put a sick person and add huge amounts of stress, and it could be trouble. I would think LONG and HARD about bringing a baby into this unless she is 100% sober. Trust me on this one

One of the hardest things for me to learn, and I'm still learning it, is that it is OK to take care of myself, it is OK for me to put me first. So, welcome and keep coming back, there are huge amounts of experience, strength and hope (ES&H) to be found here. Pretty much all of us know what it is like to be in your position because we have been there or are still there. Your friend, __________________Mike Serenity is just being me. |

I've done some reading on the boundaries part that is useful. My problem has often been that the boundaries I am trying to set are meant for her, not me and thus they don't work. Example..."Let's try and eat out only once or twice this week, we'll save money and drink less". Probably not a good "boundary" example huh? Last night, I got home from work, ate dinner...she calls me up an hour later, says she is leaving work and to meet for sushi. AKA...she wants to drink some wine. I told her I was full, was in my comfy evening clothes and didn't want to go out. She threw a hissy fit over text, said she was just going to go by herself then. I let her. I feel like this was at least a step in the right direction because I didn't help enable her or make some wishy-washy statement.

I think you did well last night by knowing what her motives were (from past experience) and told her to go on her own. I will no longer go to the booze store for my Wife, I will no longer pour my Wife a drink.

Also, I don't need to ask approval or get permission to make a choice for myself. I am giving myself permission to make my own choices. For me there has been a huge amount of freedom in that mindset. Your friend, __________________Mike Serenity is just being me.

A boundary never seeks to change or control another person. Trying to control another person or compel them to change results in mutual resentments and do not work. Boundaries are "I" statements, such as "I don't do romantic relationships with people in active addiction/alcoholism or early recovery." A boundary protects us and does not seek to control or change other people. It's the opposite of you will/ will not... or else...." Enforcing a boundary means we take responsibility for it and remove ourselves from the situation. A boundary respects that other people have a right to live their life as they choose and so does the boundary setter.

Boundaries aren't even things that you need to tell your partner about -- they aren't ultimatums, they're about your internal resolve. Like, I won't be treated this way, or I'm not going to babysit her through another party, or this subject is off the table, or the engagement is off for now, or I have no interest marrying an alcoholic, functional, recovered, or not. But with these boundaries in place, you've got an over-arching philosophy of yourself and what you're worth that you can turn to when she's quacking her alcoholic excuses at you and you're confused by the difference between what she does and what she says. Eventually you can say, you know what, I'm not fighting against this current while you try to drown yourself. Or not. Certainly enough of us have tried to stick it out for love, hoping that our partners were the exception. I certainly did. Mine relapsed this week. We are separating. Addiction is no joke. I don't wish it on anyone.

Member ?Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: SAN FRANCISCO Posts: 492 | I feel your pain... My exbf was a big drinker, all of his friends drank, he loved the bar "scene" I tried to get him to cut down and sometimes he would, made all sorts of promises, he'd quit drinking so much, he'd quit smoking. If I refused to go with him to the bars or his parties with the drinking buddies he would go anyway and I'd get accused of being anti-social. I tried setting limits, ultimatums, there were times when he would be so drunk in the middle of the day he wouldn't want to see me. Anyway you look at it, you are fighting a losing battle here. With my ex, arguing about his drinking never seemed to make things any better. We ended up breaking up. I am sad that I lost the relationship but I sure do not miss wondering which bar he is at now. If you can get the book "Codependent No More" I would highly recommend it. You can't change or "mold" anyone to be perfect but you can decide if you want to live with someone who has a drinking problem. |

I had such a hard time doing or not doing thinks because of my own choices/wants and not because I was trying to help him not drink/use. I am a great Anticipater of Needs and Protector from Uncomfortable Situations. Things got worse/better when I stopped focusing on "helping" him make the right choice. I say worse because it was uncomfortable as hell for me when I first started...fear, anxiety and feeling helpless all SUCK and learning to sit with these feelings and not try to fix things was no fun. I'll echo the people that are saying to wait and think before having kids. They are wonderful but they thrust you into a situation where you are less in control of things than you have ever been. They are needy, it's just the nature of things, and there moments of incredible love, joy and hope...you will also feel helpless in a way you never thought possible. My son is 4.

Another Day in Paradise ?Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Upland, CA Posts: 767 | I have been sober quite a few years, but I was a "highly functional alcoholic" with all sorts of stuff and a great career. I didn't lose control, until I lost control. As for the wives that knew I was pretty much all right, but did have a problem. They are now EX-WIVES. I am sure they can tell you how that worked out. Life is great now, but it didn't happen until I DECIDED TO GET SOBER FOR ME. Those around me get the benefit now, but they got all the problems then. Tell her to call for Sushi when she is sober and wants to eat raw fish. Best of luck, Jon
