Pay TV Giants to Offer Video Games Via TV Sets, Challenge Console

?

A group of big pay TV operators is gearing up to challenge such video game consoles as Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, Microsoft's XBox 360 and Nintendo's Wii by making games available via TV sets, Bloomberg News?reported.

?It said that cable giant Time Warner Cable, AT&T's U-verse and Verizon's FiOS TV are all planning to launch such cloud-based gaming services that would allow consumers to connect controllers to TV sets or set-top boxes. Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications are also in discussions to offer video game services, Bloomberg?said.

Trials are expected to start later this year, with wider deployments possible as early as 2013, the report said, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The services will go beyond social games from Zynga and casual games to include action games from big-name game makers such as Electronic Arts, according to Bloomberg.

Pay TV and telecom companies could offer the games services as part of their pay TV and/or broadband subscription packages.

The cloud-based games push could accelerate a consumer move away from consoles, which have been the gaming industry?s core money maker. The video game console business was worth $24.1 billion in the U.S. last year, according to research firm NPD Group.

?It makes perfect sense why they would want to go after this market,? Mitch Lasky, a partner at venture firm Benchmark Capital, told Bloomberg. But he also said that offering such games would require "a ton of bandwidth."

Frank Gibeau, president of Electronic Arts Labels, said games served up via Internet-enabled TV sets is a ?big opportunity? over time, but he didn't detail when it was likely to become a significant opportunity.

For game makers, the cloud approach has the benefit that they don't need to develop games for various console platforms.

Barnes & Noble takes aims at Amazon, Apple with HD Nook tablets

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Barnes & Noble Inc took a shot at archrival Amazon.com on Wednesday, unveiling its own lighter and thinner hi-definition tablets that can accommodate multiple users in a bid to win a bigger share of the exploding tablet market.

The largest U.S. bookstore chain introduced the new devices with price tags ranging from $199 for a 7-inch Nook HD tablet with 8 gigabytes of memory, to $299 for a 9-inch Nook HD+ tablet, similar in size to Apple Inc's market-leading iPad, with 32 GB of memory. IPad prices are roughly twice as high for similar devices.

The new Nooks are the latest entrants in the fight for sales of tablets and e-readers - and the digital content like books, movies and magazines that goes with them. Barnes & Noble has staked its future on its digital business as the company faces an overall industrywide drop in the sales of physical books.

"A key growth area is to get their existing customer base onto the digital platform," Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps told Reuters, saying the new devices were competitive with similar products by Amazon in terms of features and pricing.

Barnes & Noble faces formidable competition from Amazon, which can use its Prime shipping service and amazon.com site to draw users, and the iPad, which has sold in the tens of millions of units.

To keep pace, Barnes & Noble added innovative features that would allow each a family to share a Nook tablet, with each user able to create a home page and customize preferences, the first table to do so. There are also parental controls that can prevent kids from reading "Fifty Shades of Grey" or go shopping on the digital store.

The company is also launching a new video-streaming and download service for Nook, narrowing the gap with Amazon and Apple, which offer more content on their devices.

At a media event in Manhattan on Tuesday, officials said the company had emphasized features such as image resolution and page-turning technology given the needs of its basic customers, book and magazine readers.

"We are playing in the tablet space, but reading is at our core," Barnes & Noble Chief Executive William Lynch told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

The 7-inch tablet weighs 11.1 ounces. Its larger sibling is 18.2 ounces, making it lighter than the iPad and making them both more appropriate for reading, he added. The iPad weighs about 23 ounces.

The top U.S. bookstore chain launched its first Nook device, a basic e-reader, in 2009 and has held its own with deep-pocketed rivals Amazon, Apple and Google Inc. That success has allowed it to garner as much as 30 percent of the U.S. electronic-books market.

Barnes & Noble's new devices, available for pre-order on Wednesday, will ship in October and be in U.S. stores in November. They will be on sale in Britain beginning in late November at chains including Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

BRUISING PRICE WARS

The tablet market is among the fastest-growing sectors of the technology industry. Research firm Gartner forecasts that sales will almost double this year, to 118.9 million units.

Barnes & Noble's latest Nooks will appear in its nearly 700 stores as well as chains Best Buy Co Inc, Target Corp and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Target and Wal-Mart have decided to no longer carry Amazon's Kindles, giving the Nook an edge at thousands of retail locations.

Amazon.com Inc earlier this month unveiled its own HD tablets. It launched its first last year and says it has a 22 percent share of the U.S. market.

With the new Nooks, Barnes & Noble is also taking aim at Apple, whose iPad is far more expensive, because there is room in the market for a strong tablet at a lower price, Lynch said.

Questions about the Nook's long-term viability arose last month after Barnes & Noble reported that Nook revenue including ebooks last quarter was up only 0.3 percent, hurt by price decreases early in the summer. That has added urgency to developing new products.

Price wars with Amazon have been bruising, but Lynch was undismayed: "We're growing the digital content portion of the business, and that's where we envision making our economics," Lynch said.

Last quarter, Barnes & Noble lost business when it didn't have enough Nook devices that allow for reading in the dark. Lynch said the company is now producing HD tablets in numbers sufficient to meet what it expects will be strong demand during the holiday period.

"We believe we'll gain significant share in the tablet category, and we've planned for that from a production standpoint. I believe these are going to be hot holiday gifts."

Renting out our house - Home Schooling and Classical Education ...

this depends on your business savvy and ability to manage a rental situation. I tried it and do not have that, and I myself would not do it again.

the first family who rented it signed a 12 month please then left 3 months early, and I had great difficulty meeting the next three mortgage payments. Ultimately my mom baled me out or my mortgage lender might have gotten very unpleasant. The renter said his mother told him "people do it all the time". He even accused me of trying to take advantage of him, asserting that he had to leave and if he paid me what he owed, I would just re rent it and profit unfairly from him. I almost lost my house. He was a "good church going" man. On another occasion his wife told me the rent check was "in the mail", but when I dropped by to repair a jammed garbage disposal (she had put a fork down it), the check was lying on the table.

The next guy gave me a months deposit but eventually he bought a new car and could not make both car and house payments so stopped paying me. He too left in arrears and my window air conditioner left with him. A powerful but less than careful man, he also managed somehow to pull down the garage door and I had to listen to his wife berate me for the "hazard" and also pay for a new door of course, this not being too far out of the ordinary except for her attitude.

When I was a student, and then as a young married, I/we also sublet our apartments a few times, Every time I returned to find I had been robbed, and once a a student ALL my furniture had gone with the tenant. he claimed he thought I was not coming back in time to move out on schedule and moved it out for me. I never recovered any of it before leaving the state. As young marrieds we lost our silverware wedding present, and lived without any for the next 30-40 years. Now that we have some we use it every day for fun and to catch up.

I myself would not take on the headache of managing my own home rental and indeed, except in case of absolute necessity, would never rent it at all. good luck, maybe you are or can learn to be a competent manager.

I do not enjoy dealing with people who justify any wrong they do me by pretending that I am rich and they are poor and needy, nor having my property in their care. of course there are many fine people looking for a rental, but I did not notice them applying to me. Maybe an incompetent business person like me just attracts the awful tenants. so i guess my lesson is not that all renters are bad news but that you need a competent manger to weed them out for you and too handle them if they slip in.

Amy Bishop, avoided a death sentence by admitting earlier this month to gunning down her colleagues during a biology department staff meeting at the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

Alabama law requires a jury to decide the punishment and confirm a guilty plea for a capital murder charge.

Bishop's defense attorneys did not contest the facts of the case during the abbreviated proceedings on Monday.

"She has admitted she did these terrible things," defense attorney Robert Tuten said in his opening statement.

Bishop, a Harvard-trained biologist and mother of four, was accused of shooting her colleagues execution-style in February 2010. Colleagues believed Bishop was angry that the school had denied her tenure.

The trial on Monday took less than two hours and featured only two witnesses. One was Bishop's former colleague Debra Moriarity, who recalled how she tried to take Bishop down after the woman started firing during the meeting.

Trying to stop shooting

Trained in gun safety by her hunter father, Moriarity testified that she ducked and crawled under a table to grab Bishop's legs.

"I was yelling, 'Stop, Amy! Stop! Don't do this!'" said Moriarity, who is now chairwoman of the biology department.

Moriarity said Bishop then pointed the gun at her. As Moriarity begged for her life, Bishop repeatedly pulled the trigger but the gun jammed, Moriarity testified. She said Bishop was silent during the attack.

As a police investigator showed jurors photos of the dead professors on Monday, Bishop put her head on the defense table and softly sobbed. Bishop, who last year had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, did not speak during the trial.

After her arrest in Alabama, authorities in Braintree, Massachusetts, charged Bishop with the 1986 shooting death of her teenage brother.

Authorities in Massachusetts were awaiting the outcome of the Alabama trial before deciding how to proceed in their case.

Jurors on Monday did not have to weigh Bishop's guilt in the attempted murder charges, for which Circuit Judge Alan Mann sentenced her to three consecutive life sentences.

After the trial, professor Joseph Leahy, who lost an eye in the shooting and has just returned to teaching, said he felt the verdict was just.

"Seeing the photos was tough - I was seeing the bodies of my friends," he said. "They took the first three shots, and I got the fourth. I feel fortunate to be alive."
