What's New: It's the fastest, most powerful Bentley ever. And, surprisingly, it's the most efficient (a relative measure, admittedly, since we're talking supercars). New close-ratio 8-speed ZF transmission gives the engine more headroom and adds mpg.
Tech Tidbit: The ZF automatic transmission allows "block shifting"?drivers can jump directly from 8th to 3rd gear.
Driving Character: Imagine sinking into a soft yet supportive leather armchair while listening to a concerto in a wood-paneled gentleman's club. Now imagine that somebody attached a liquid-fueled rocket to the back of that chair that blasted you, the fancy wood paneling, and the string quartet forward so fast that you barely had time to adjust your expression. That's what it feels like driving the GT Speed.
We got the opportunity to test one at up to 180 mph on the German Autobahn, and then in the twisty mountain roads along the border with Austria. The GT Speed rides comfortably around town, but in Sport mode its outpouring of acceleration hits you in the backside like a blunt instrument.
Once you get it up into the triple digits, the ride is amazingly smooth and manageable. But in tight switchbacks, you can't help but notice this vehicle's 5000-pound-plus weight. The car wants desperately to lean, but the self-leveling air suspension and antiroll bars fight back, creating one of the great all-time battles of engineering versus physics.
Favorite Detail: Bentley leather comes from northern-climate Scandinavian cows, who live where insect bites are rare.
Driver's Grievance: The options. How's about an extra $13,600 for carbon ceramic brakes? Or $7155 for a super high-end Naim stereo (which, for the record, sounds incredible)? I suppose, though, that if the starting price of $215,000 doesn't scare you, neither will the additions.
The Bottom Line: The Continental GT is a pretty amazing combination of supercar and luxury cruiser?incredibly comfortable and plush yet violently fast.
